About Us

Fort la Reine Museum is home to 28 unique heritage sites that will leave you breathless. The homes and buildings are designed not only to show the artifacts, but also to illustrate the lifestyle of a prairie community. As well as the life of early pioneers you can also discover the trials of early frontier entrepreneurs; following along on their journey of trading furs for goods and living away from their families. Browsing through the homes and the many displays therein; it will allow you to appreciate the hardships and joys of the early settlers in the prairie area.

Canada 150 Upgrades:

The Fort la Reine Museum will open its doors in 2017 with new facility improvements towards goals of full accessibility to the museum for everyone. With Canada 150 projects to improve our infrastructure, the Fort la Reine Museum is working to remove and prevent barriers to accessibility and meet the requirements of the "Accessibility for Manitobans Act" thanks to support from the Government of Canada, the City of Portage la Prairie, and the Rural Municipality of Portage la Prairie. Visitors to our main gallery will be greeted by new automatic doors, barrier free washrooms and ramps, and new interpretive plans in place to help us better serve our public as a barrier free facility in keeping with the City of Portage 2016-18 Accessibility Plan. The City of Portage 2016-18 Accessibility Plan states "The City of Portage la Prairie is committed to providing equal service to all citizens and visitors regardless of their abilities. To remove and prevent barriers to accessibility and to meet the requirements of the "Accessibility for Manitobans Act"
