Virtual Field Trips

"Unmasking Influenza" Virtual Field Trip

Allow staff members at the Fort la Reine Museum to transport your group back in time to the beginning of the Spanish Flu outbreak of 1918. A staff member will deliver a live virtual tour of the main gallery at the Museum, which currently hosts the renowned “Unmasking Influenza” exhibition from Ingenium Canada.

The exhibit outlines the history of the Spanish Flu in Canada, including the uncertainties of its origins during the end of WW1, the physical and emotional impact on Canadians, medicinal and home remedies that were practiced, as well as comparable public health restrictions that were exercised at the time to reduce the spread. Your class/group will be asked to brainstorm comparisons that could be drawn from the Spanish Flu to Covid-19, while filling out a provided Venn diagram and taking part in an interactive trivia activity led by the Museum. The Fort la Reine Museum will also supply you with a link to the official “Unmasking Influenza” documentary (50 minutes) that you may choose to screen after the field trip program.
